How the winners and losers brackets fit together
Everyone starts in the winners bracket. Lose there and you move across to the losers bracket rather than going home. The losers bracket runs alongside, absorbing players as they drop, and eliminating them on their second defeat.
The two brackets converge at the grand final: the last player standing in the winners bracket meets the survivor of the losers bracket. Working out which losers-bracket slot each defeated player belongs in is the fiddly part of drawing one by hand, and the part a generator removes entirely.
How many matches it takes
Roughly twice a knockout: about two matches per participant, minus two. A 16-player double elimination runs 30 matches against the 15 of a single elimination, so budget close to double the time or double the tables.
That is the trade you are making. You pay in matches and get a result that survives scrutiny, because nobody goes home after one bad start.
The grand final and the bracket reset
The player who reaches the grand final through the winners bracket has not lost all day. Their opponent has lost once. If the losers-bracket player wins the grand final, both have one defeat — which is why many events play a bracket reset: a second, deciding match.
It is a fairness question, not a rule. Decide before the event and tell the players, because it changes how the last hour of your schedule looks.
When to use double elimination
Use it when people travelled to be there, when there is prize money, or when the field is small enough that a single upset would leave the event without its best players. Esports brackets, darts and pool tournaments, and club championships are the usual home.
Skip it when the clock is tight or you have one table. With a single playing surface the losers bracket roughly doubles an already long evening.

- What is a bracket reset?
- A deciding second grand final, played if the losers-bracket finalist wins the first one. It ensures nobody is eliminated on a single defeat.
- Is double elimination worth the extra time?
- If the result matters or people travelled, yes. If you have one table and three hours, single elimination will finish and double elimination will not.
- Can I run several brackets at once?
- Yes. A single tournament can hold several brackets in parallel — useful for separate divisions, age groups or disciplines at one event.
